From faculty’s history

Specialists in biology were educated in Perm State University at 3 departments, they are:: Morphology and Systematization of Plants, Physiology of Plants, Zoology. These departments were a part of the Department of Natural Sciences of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In 1931 Faculty of Biology was separated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics and became a separate structural unit.

In formation of the biological education, in organizing of the biological and medico-biological researches in Perm State University an exceptional role was played by A.A.Rikhter, A.AZavarzin, Y.A.Orlov, V.N.Becklemishev, who later became academics of The Academy of Sciense of The USSR; professors A.G. Genkel, D.G.Fedotov, B.F.Verigo, V.K.Shmidt, P.V.Siuzev, D.A.Sabinin. Scientific directions, created by him, departments and museums founded, Botanical Gardens and Kama Biological Station , Biological Institution (which was later reorganized into The Institution of Natural Sciense) became the base for forming of the new generations of biologists, many of which left the trace in the history of the Faculty and the University. They are professors A.A.Lyubishchev, E.S.Danini, A.O.Tauson, P.A.Genkel, V.A.Zakhvatkin, V.A.Kriuger, A.N.Probatov, M.I.Menshikov, A.I.Bukirev, I.I>Bashlikov, D.E.Kharitonov, F.A.binov, A.I.Oborin, A.N.Ponomarev, A.M.Ovesnov, A.G.Markin, L.A.Boiko and others.

Within the speciality of Ecology students have the specialization 013122 Biovariety and Environment Protection. Students of this speciality (as well as students of the speciality of Biology) study different levels of structure of alive creatures. Though much more attention in their education is paid to the study of the structure and functioning of the supersystems: populations, biocoenosis, biogecoenosis, and biosphere. When graduating from the university the students are given the qualification of “Ecologist”.

According to “The State Demands to the Minimum of the Content and the Level of Professional Skills of the Graduating Student for Getting an Additional Qualification “Teacher”, graduating students of the specialities of Biology and Ecology are given a supplementary qualification of “Teacher”.

The faculty also educates students on the multilevel system on the speciality of 510600 Biology:
- 4-year training (baccalaureate),
qualification – “The Bachelor of Biology”;
- 6-year training ( master’s degree),
qualification – “Master of Biology”.

Post graduate students have got 3 years of tuition (for full-time students0 and 4 years of tuition (for external students) on the following specialities: 03.00.05 Botanic, 03.00.07 Microbiology, 03.00.08 Zoology, 03.00.10 Ichthyology, 03.00.16 Ecology, 03.00.18 Hydrobiology, 14.00.36 Allergology and Immunology.

Only Specialists (5 years of tuition) and Masters of Biology (6 years) can become post graduates. After finishing successfully their post graduate course and defending their thesis, post graduates are given the degree of “Candidate of Biological Sciences”.

At the University there is also the Doctor’s degree dissertation council on the specialities 03.00.05 Botanics and 03.00.16 Ecology. The head of the council is Professor V.A.Vereshchagina. The core of the council are Doctor of degree of the Biological Faculty: V.A.Vereshchagina( the head), E.I.Demianova, O.Z.Eremchenko, S.A.Ovesnov, L.G.Perevedentseva, V.G.Remennikov, B.V.Testov, A.I.Shepel.

The Form of Study

The faculty educates students on the basis of;
- full-time education: specialities 011600 Biology and 013100 Ecology, specialization 510600 Biology;
- external education (evening): 011600 Biology.

During the 4 years of studying at the baccalaureate students get the basic biological education. This level presupposes the deep study of the fundamental disciplines on nature and society: physics, chemistry, biology, geology, geography, sociology, philosophy and philosophical problems of natural sciences, mathematics, computing, foreign language. The majority of hours of studying is devoted to the biological sciences themselves, which are about the different levels of the organization of alive creatures. When studying biological chemistry, molecule biology, and biophysics students get profound knowledge about the structure and functions of the cell.

Altogether with this students are given knowledge about the variety and peculiarities of organization of different groups of alive creatures: bacteria and viruses, plants, mushrooms, animals and a human being as a biosocial creature; about the differentiation and integration of the functions of the organism as a whole system, about comparative-physiological aspects of function forming from the elementary forms of alive creatures up to the human being. When studying the groups of alive creatures there considered the possible ways of evolutionary development within each group – from comparatively primitive ones to more complex and progressive. It also enables to imagine all the variety of forms of adaptation of organisms to many different conditions of environment on the planet and helps to form an ecological approach in education.

Ecological approach is the major feature of the biological education. Apart from the particularly ecological courses: ecology and rational nature using, mathematical models in ecology, economical basis of the nature using – students acquire ecological knowledge while studying fundamental biological disciplines. Students may also take special courses on the ecology of microorganisms, plants, parasites, insects, fishes, water domains, ground vertebrates, and on radiation ecology. Fundamental knowledge on heredity and variability of alive creatures enable to form the students’ deep understanding of evolution processes, taking place within alive systems of different levels.

Students take special courses at the departments of the faculty in the form of special tuition courses, logically connected according to historically accepted the scientific directions of microbiology, floristic sand geobotanics, cytology and genetics, physiology and biochemistry of plants and microorganisms, ecology of water domains, systematic and ecology of Arachnids, insects, fishes, ground vertebrates and immunology.

Students have their study practice course and productive practice course in the experimental-studying farm “Troitskoe”, scientific-educational base “Preduralie”, Okhanskaia Biostation (Perm

Region), and in the laboratories and at the expeditions of the departments of the faculty and scientific research institutions of Russian Academy of sciences and scientific-practice enterprises of the country.

The students of Baccalaureate are also taught the disciplines on psychology and pedagogical disciplines. This course ends in the pedagogical practical course at school on Biology and Chemistry.

The whole Bachelor’s course finishes with passing the state inter-discipline examination “Biology” and defending the final thesis. The graduating bachelor student having passed all the exams gets the degree (qualification) “Bachelor of Biology”. The diploma of Bachelor enables ex-students to apply for the vacancies in educational and research establishments as having higher education. This diploma also allows going further and studying for the Master’s degree.

Magistrature (studying for the Master’s degree) is the 3rd level of getting the higher education (the period of studies is 2 years after getting the Bachelor’s degree). It presupposes the combination of a deeper special preparation in a chosen sphere of Biology and continuing common education. Student’s for the Master’s Degree specialize at the departments of the faculty according to one of the following programs: 510603 Zoology of Vertebrates, 510604 Zoology of Invertebrates, 510605 Botany, 510608 Physiology of Plants, 510609 Genetics, 510612 Microbiology and Virusology, 510618 Immunology, 510620 Medico-biological sciences, 510622 Entomology.

Besides, magistrantes acquire the methodology of scientific creative activity, contemporary computers’ technologies, the methods of acquirement, interpretation and keeping the scientific information, the skills of self-control scientific research work and scientific pedagogical work.

As a result of studying for the Master’s Degree students defend their Master’s of Degree Thesis and get a degree (qualification) “Master of Biology”. Under the conditions of satisfying “The State Demands to the Minimum Content and the Level of Skills of the Graduating Student for the Master of Science for Getting the Complimentary Qualification ”The tutor of the Higher Educational Institution” graduating students get the supplementary degree “The Tutor of Higher Educational Institution”.
