The department was founded in 1994. The Department’s staff consists of 5 professors, Doctors of science – Academic of RAS V.A.Chereshnev, Corresponding Member of RAS I.B.Ivshina, A.G.Tkachenko, S.V.Shirshev, V.A.Demacov and 6 Assistant Professors, Candidates of Science – B.A.Bakh metiev, S.V.gein, V.P.Korobov, M.S.Kuyukina, S.P.Tendriakova, Y.I.Shilov. Annually there are 30 to 35 students studying at the department on two specialities: 011611 Microbiology, 011622 Immunology. The Scientific-practical base of the Department consists of 8 laboratories of the Institution of ecology and Genetics of Microorganisms of Ural Department of Russian Academy of Sciences: the Laboratory Alcanotrofic Microorganisms, the laboratory of Morphology and Ultrastructure of Bacteria, the laboratory of Biochemistry if Microorganisms, the laboratory of Bioenergy of Microorganisms, the laboratory of Chemical Mutagenesis, the laboratory of Ecological Genetics, the laboratory of Ecological Immunology, The Service laboratory. These laboratories enable to solve the tasks of the educational process and make scientific research works on the high methodic level.

The Department the faculty with the following common courses: Immunology, Introduction into Biotechnology, Ecological Toxicology, Ecological Biotechnology.

Within the specialization Microbiology the following courses are read: Systematics of Prokaryotic Microorganisms, Ultrastructure of Bacteria, Physiology, Biochemistry and Bioenergy of Microorganisms, Genetics of Microorganisms and Viruses, Molecular genetics of microorganisms, Industrial Microbiology etc.

Within the specialization of Immunology the following courses are read: Common Endocrinology, Experimental Models in Pathology, Path Biochemistry, The theory of Biological and Medico-biological Experiment, Immunological Chemistry, Molecular Immunobiology, Immunology of Reproduction, Experimental Immunopathology and Immunotherapy, Neuroendocrine Regulation of Immunogenesis and others.

Within multilevel education the Department prepares students on 2 magister’s programs: 510612 Microbiology and Virusology and 510618 Immunology. The department also participates in the preparation students on the magister’s program 510620 Medico-biological Sciences.

The Department also educates post graduate students on the programs: 03.00.07 Microbiology, 14.00.36 Allergology and Immunology.

Annually at the department there led course papers, baccalaureate final thesis, final specialists’ thesis, magisters’ dissertations. The students take part in the work of local, regional, national and international conferences. Practically every student and a magistrate have scientific publications. During the time of the Department’s work its students repeatedly got city and regional stipendiums.
